MCHC opens in Nusrat Bhutto Colony

KARACHI - Mother and Child Health Centre (MCHC) set up recently in North Nazimabad’s Nusrat Bhutto Colony will provide better health facilities to the residents of the locality at their doorstep, sources in Sindh health department told Medical News.

Recalling that the country’s former prime minister Shaheed Benazir Bhutto had, in 1995-96, directed the authorities concerned to set up a maternity home in Nusrat Bhutto Colony, an official said that the provincial health department complying with her orders constructed a building in the Colony to house a 22-bed maternity home in 1998, but much before its inauguration a major portion of the health facility was occupied by a political party with the consent of the then provincial government.

However, the activists of the political party vacated the building of the maternity home about a month back when paramilitary force conducted a raid there following news concerning illegal occupation of the health facility appeared in a section of the press.

Shortly afterwards, the provincial health department got possession of the building and set up an MCHC there, he said, and added that vaccination of nine fatal diseases, including polio, measles, childhood tuberculosis, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, pneumonia, hepatitis and meningitis are available at the health facility to protect children from these preventable diseases.

He hoped that with the opening of the MCHC, not only the residents of Nusrat Bhutto Colony, but those living in adjacent localities such as Shadman Town, Mustafabad, Manghopir, Khalilabad, would also benefit.
