Naegleria claims another life – third this year

KARACHI: Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the brain-eating amoeba, has claimed another life in the city, bringing the total death toll of the disease this year to three.
According to the Sindh Health Department, the thirs victim, 22-year-old Aurangzeb, had a picnic with friends on July 7 at a local farmhouse, where they swam in a pool.
Aurangzeb later experienced fever, headache, and vomiting and was admitted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where he died during treatment. He was a resident of Landhi Cattle Colony.
The two others — one from Malir and the other from Hyderabad— also succumbed to the disease in July. Over the past 12 years, more than 100 cases have been documented in Sindh, with only one patient surviving for three months.
Naegleria fowleri thrives in warm freshwater environments like lakes, rivers, hot springs, and inadequately maintained swimming pools. Infections occur when contaminated water enters the nose, allowing the amoeba to travel to the brain and cause primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). This typically fatal condition rapidly destroys brain tissue.
