DG Health Sindh issues urgent directives to combat H1N1 surge

KARACHI: The Director General (DG) Health Sindh has issued urgent directives to all Medical Superintendents (MSs) and heads of hospitals to implement immediate measures in response to the rising cases of H1N1 influenza across the province.

Amid the ongoing winter season and an alarming surge in H1N1 infections, healthcare facilities have been instructed to enhance active surveillance and ensure prompt reporting of suspected and confirmed cases to the provincial health office.

To mitigate the spread of the virus, hospitals must ensure the availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) and essential medical supplies. Special emphasis has been placed on reinforcing infection prevention and control (IPC) practices in both public and private healthcare facilities.

Additionally, the DG Health has directed hospitals to launch public awareness campaigns highlighting preventive measures such as mask-wearing, frequent handwashing, and maintaining social distance. The importance of seasonal influenza vaccination, particularly for vulnerable groups—including healthcare workers, elderly individuals, and patients with chronic illnesses—must be actively promoted.

Healthcare institutions are also required to disseminate information regarding H1N1 symptoms and encourage the public to seek timely medical attention.

All medical superintendents and executive directors of health institutions must submit weekly situation reports detailing case numbers, interventions, and operational challenges to the DG Health office.
