Lack of oxygen supply claims lives of five Larkana infants

KARACHI: According to a report, five young children died at the children's ward, Chandka Medical College Hospital in Larkana on December 13th because of inadequate oxygen supply.

One of the five children was two years of age when he breathed his last, while the other four were new born babies.

The Medical Superintendent of the Hospital stated that the Sindh provincial government had allotted a budget to the hospital, but the bill was not passed officially. As a result of this, the Chandka Hospital and its children’s ward ran out of oxygen supply thus leading to the tragic deaths of the infants.

During November, a similar situation was reported from Sargodha’s District Headquarters Hospital, where a number of children lost their lives and families were torn apart due to shortage of oxygen supply, negligence on part of the administration and inadequate medical facilities at the Hospital.

According to the 2014 federal budget, a total sum of Rs26.8 billion has been allocated to the health sector, whereas the Sindh government has allocated a sum of Rs 43.58 billion for the same purpose. Both governments have significantly increased the health sector budgets for 2014 as compared to last year.
