SIUT lauded by Australian Renal Physician

Karachi March 2014: Professor Jeremy Chapman the former President of the World Transplantation Society has called for mustering active community support and good governance for ethical and quality organ transplantation program in any society.

Professor Chapman - a globally renowned renal physician from Australia was speaking at the concluding session of a post graduate training course on renal transplantation, organized recently by the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT). The week long course was also attended by three other renowned physicians from Australia.

Speaking on the occasion the visiting Australian physician pointed out that; Pakistan is not the only country which faces the issue of unethical of transplantation and commercial trade of organs, as these problem also exist in many developed countries. He however lauded the outstanding services of SIUT in extending highly ethical and world-class transplantation facilities, offered FREE of cost for the poor masses. He also advocated the need of successful implementation of deceased donor program in Pakistan. Stressing the importance of the program, he said; Success of the program will go a long way in saving the lives of big populations reaching the end stage of their lives.

Addressing the participants, Professor Adib-ul-Hasan Rizvi - Director SIUT gave an overview of transplant activities in the country and contribution of SIUT in this regard. Highlighting the challenges, he said; “Pakistan, as a developing country, faces numerous issues in the health care system, while a high rate of infections makes the task more difficult for those engaged in such procedures.

Visiting Professor - Richard Allen presented his paper on transplant evaluation, while Dr John Swinnen highlighted the steps for improving dialysis access and Dr Matthew Sullivan presented his study in combating infection. Professor Altaf Hashmi and Professor Naqi Zafar of SIUT presented papers from their respective fields.
