ISLAMABAD: Pakistan continues to grapple with its polio challenge as the total number of cases this year climbs to 63 following the confirmation of four new cases. The Regional Reference Laboratory at the National Institute of Health verified these cases, which originated from Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Jacobabad, and Sukkur.
According to the laboratory’s data:
- This marks the 9th case from Dera Ismail Khan.
- Jacobabad has now reported its third case.
- Sukkur registered its first case of the year.
These latest cases underscore the geographical spread of the virus, with 26 cases reported in Balochistan, 18 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 17 in Sindh, and 1 each in Punjab and Islamabad.
This surge comes just days after three new polio cases had brought the year's total to 59, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced vaccination campaigns and public health interventions.
Despite concerted eradication efforts, the recurrence of polio cases signals systemic gaps in vaccine coverage, particularly in vulnerable areas such as Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Experts emphasize the need for intensified outreach to counter vaccine resistance and improve community participation in immunization programs.
The resurgence of polio in multiple provinces remains a pressing concern for public health authorities. As Pakistan works toward its eradication goals, comprehensive strategies combining vaccination drives, public awareness campaigns, and better healthcare infrastructure are critical.
