10th Convocation of DUHS held at Karachi

KARACHI: The 10th Convocation of the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) was held at the Cricket Ground of the DUHS Ojha Campus, Karachi. Governor Sindh, Imran Ismail was invited as the Chief Guest of the Convocation. According to the Dow University of Health Sciences’ statistical record, the 10th Convocation conferred 1349 degrees to graduates, postgraduates, and doctorate.

The event was attended by the Vice-Chancellor of the Dow University of Health Sciences, Prof Dr Mohammed Saeed Quraishy, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Dr Zarnaz Wahid, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Chairperson, Convocation Committee, Dr Kartar Dawani, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof Khawar Saeed Jamali, Registrar, DUHS, Prof Amanullah Abbasi, Principal, Dow Medical College, Prof Amjad Siraj Memon, and Vice-Principal, Dow International Medical College, Prof Ramlah Naz. Senior faculty members including Prof Syed Mukarram Ali, Prof Zeba Haque, Prof Saba Sohail, Prof Fawad Ali Musa, Prof Nawaz Lashari, Prof Sanam Soomro, Prof Zahid Azam, Prof Nadeem Ahmed, Prof Sumbul Shamim, Prof Jahan Ara, Prof Fouzia Imtiaz, Prof Akhtar Ali Baloch, Prof Nisar Ahmed Rao, as well as a huge crowd of students and their parents were present at the event.

While speaking to the audience, Imran Ismail noted that female students were the ones to stay at the forefront of medical education but fell being to pursue their profession. The Sindh Government wished to support students. Students should play their part in their professional careers with responsibility and dignity as they demonstrated while receiving their professional education.

The Governor of Sindh said that it was a proud moment for the graduates. He said that DUHS was among the top 500 universities in Asia and it was an honor for students to be part of this varsity. He predicted that all the Gold Medalists and high achievers would be girls. He said, “Our girls are in the lead on educational grounds. Now, we have to bring them up in their practical lives too.”

The Governor added that when he was a student, his sisters used to beat him in studies. He further said that the best graduates of Pakistan look forward to serve in abroad. We should feel proud to know that the recent Heart Transplant in America was also done by an alumnus of the Dow University of Health Sciences. We should make such policies that the students should look forward to serving their own country and utilizing their talent for their own people.

He said that the Federal Government had started the Successful Young Generation Program on the same concept. According to this program, students could take loan of approximately 5 million rupees and could start their own small clinic, diagnostic, or research center.

He hoped that the students aimed to serve humanity and their nation as this should be their sole mission. He congratulated the parents of the students and said that this is due to their efforts that their children were witnessing this day.

While addressing the event, Prof Dr Saeed Quraishy, said that the Dow University of Health Sciences was responsible for producing some of the best health professionals in the world. This was a proud moment for the students, as well as their parents. He emphasized that the students should serve humanity to the best of their abilities and never deny treatment to those who are needy. He added that every religion teaches students to attain education.

Prof Dr Kartar Dawani presented the welcome note at the beginning of the ceremony while the Pro-Vice-Chancellor gave a vote of thanks to those in attendance at the end of the ceremony.

PhD degrees were awarded to two students this year. The degrees along with 27 gold medals, 27 silver medals, and 27 bronze medals were presented to high achievers for their outstanding performance by the Governor of Sindh, Imran Ismail.
