High Incidence of Kidney Stones: REPORTED!

KARACHI- Eminent Urologists and Nephrologists recently revealed that, the incidence of Kidney Stones is common in adult and pediatric population of Pakistan. It is said that our country is located within the ‘Kidney Stone Belt’ region.

“High temperature, long summer season, poor access to clean drinking water and malnutrition seen in children; these are some major reasons behind the high incidence of kidney stones in children and adults of Pakistan.”  -Specialists.

A number of Urologists and laparoscopic surgeons and trainers from United Kingdom (UK) Dr. Kamran Ahmed, Dr. Huixia Zhou from China, Dr. Bogadan Petrut from Romania and various other countries, expressed their expert opinions and views, during a two-day training workshop, organized for young urologists at Tabba Kidney Institute (TKI), Karachi. Around 32 young urologists from all over Pakistan participated in this two-day workshop. During the workshop, first time ever in Pakistan, Live  3-D Urological surgery techniques were displayed simultaneously from the Operation Theater (OT) for all the participants.

Consultant Urologist Dr. Sharjeel Saulat stated regarding the event’s workshop that, it will open tremendous learning opportunities for young urologists. The master class consisted of multiple topics, such as, setting up a laparoscopic operating room, hands-on training on biochemical tissue in dry lab setting, hands-on simulation for common procedures and informative lectures. This class was endorsed by European Association of Urology (EAU),  Pakistan Association of Urological Surgeons (PAUS), Karachi Chapter; and Department of Medical Education of CPSP awarded CME hours to the participants. Moreover, EAU conducted a written examination of the interested participants at the end of the master class.

Chief Operating Officer, TKI, Dr. Syed Aqeel Ahmed, said that, Tabba Kidney Institute is the only hospital in Pakistan, where most advance 3D Urological Surgeries Techniques has been introduced for adults and children.
