KARACHI: Barrister Murtaza Wahab, Administrator of Karachi, Spokesman for the Sindh government and the Chief Minister’s Advisor on Law recently said that cabinet approval would be sought to upgrade the Karachi Medical and Dental College (KMDC) to university status under the title ‘Karachi Metropolitan University.

The Administrator expressed these views while addressing a function at the Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry (Darul-Sehat Hospital, LCMD) as the chief guest at the awards ceremony and certificates of appreciation for the students who have been successful in various competitions of Students Week.

Amir Chishti, LCMD chairman, Dr Rasheed Naseem Khan, the principal of LCMD and Dr Farhan were also present on occasion. A large number of medical students also attended the ceremony.

The Administrator said that making KMDC a university is a decision sought from the Cabinet in the next three months. I promise the citizens of Karachi that we will make KMDC an excellent and complete medical university.

“This city, this province and this country are ours. We have to go to the same soil, then why don’t we do something for this city. We all have to come forward to make our country better. If we create a better society and move beyond constructive thinking, it will be better for the country and the nation.,” he added.

Mr Murtaza added that they are in favour of the revival of the student union, adding that students should also learn politics. This will enable good citizens, lawyers, doctors as well as good politicians to fulfil their duties.

“It was straightforward for me to practice, I used to go around with my family every year, but I chose politics and thought that I should play my role for the service of the country. Now I can’t give much time to home and children,” he added.

“My elders are buried in this city, in this land. I love this land, and I am determined to do something for it. It is better to make your country strong and prosperous than to go abroad,” he said.

He later distributed prizes and certificates to the winners of various student competitions.
