KARACHI: The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) has initiated a recall of a cough syrup following the identification of harmful ingredients in its formulation.

The primary component, Propylene Glycol, was procured by a local entity from Thailand and distributed to various pharmaceutical companies across the country for the production of cough syrups. The demand for these syrups has surged due to the prevalent influenza and respiratory illnesses in the country, as reported by Drap officials.

MBK Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of the implicated cough syrup, has been directed by Drap to execute the recall.

In an expansive move, Drap is not only recalling the affected cough syrup but is also investigating the issue to pinpoint the importer responsible for supplying the questionable raw material to diverse pharmaceutical firms. Simultaneously, efforts are underway to identify companies that utilized this "substandard" raw material.

DRAP has pledge legal action against individuals implicated in the controversy and the Lahore-based company associated with the manufacture of the recalled cough syrup.
