Vitamin D is essential to initiate oncological and inflammatory responses as well as fight heart disease. Sufficient Vitamin D levels in the body can improve life expectancy and lower mortality rates. However, the effect of Vitamin D on brain function is now been determined as well.
Kyla Shea, a researcher on this experiment has indicated that a rise of Vitamin D levels in the body can ward off illnesses like dementia and improve intellectual activity in adults.
290 individuals, who agreed to donate their brains after death, were a major part of this research. These brains were examined carefully in post-mortem. This experiment revealed that a larger amount of Vitamin D in the brain showed a decreased risk of at least 33% of the development of dementia.
However, further research is required to understand the mechanism of Vitamin D in improving cognitive function. Scientists do believe that it may be due to the effect of Vitamin D on neurodegeneration.
