KARACHI: The seventh death anniversary of Dr. Ruth Pfau, the renowned German doctor and nun who dedicated her life to eradicating leprosy in Pakistan, was observed with a resolve to eradicate the disease from the globe.
Born on September 9, 1929, in Leipzig, Germany, Dr. Pfau studied medicine in 1957 and later emigrated to Pakistan in 1961, devoting more than 55 years of her life to fighting leprosy, establishing 157 leprosy clinics across Pakistan where over 56,780 patients were treated.
Dr. Pfau’s tireless efforts earned her numerous honors, including the Hilal-e-Pakistan, Hilal-i-Imtiaz, Nishan-i-Quaid-e-Azam, and Sitara-i-Quaid-i-Azam awards. Often hailed as the "Mother Teresa of Pakistan," she passed away on August 10, 2017, at the age of 87 in Karachi.
