World Kidney Day - Villagers throng SIUT’s medical camps

KARACHI- Voicing concern over growing incidence of kidney-related disorders, particularly among children, experts underscored the need for creating awareness about the ailments among the masses.

They were speaking at a seminar held here under the aegis of Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) to mark the World Kidney Day at its Kathore-Malir Centre. This year’s theme of the day is “Kidney diseases and Children, act early to prevent it”.

According to nephrologists and urologists, around 10 per cent of the world population was suffering from some kind of kidney diseases and it will be around 18pc in the next decade.

They said that kidney diseases affect millions of people globally, including children. However, since kidney disease was non-specific among children, the risk of missing kidney-related problems among them always remains there, they cautioned.

Moreover, the most vulnerable to the kidney diseases are the children of rural areas due to inadequate basic health facilities, shortage of potable water, malnourishment and lack of education. They urged the civil society, decision-makers and media professionals to come forward and supplement the efforts being made to tackle the kidney-related issues.

Meanwhile, a large number of men, women and children, belonging to about 30 villages, thronged medical camps which the SIUT had set up at Kathore and Ibrahim Hyderi for carrying out different tests, including blood, urine and for blood pressure.
