Govt committed to eradicate polio: Ebad

KARACHI- Voicing concern over increasing cases of polio in recent years across Pakistan, Sindh governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan said such a situation has affected the country’s credibility.

Reiterating the government’s resolve to make Pakistan a polio-free country, the governor said that both the federal and Sindh governments are taking measures to eradicate this harmful disease.

He was speaking to a delegation of International Polio-Plus Committee. The delegation was led by the committee’s chairman Michael McGovern and its members included Rotary Foundation’s vice chairman Caral Sandak, and International Polio-Plus Committee’s Adviser Aziz Memon.

Dr Ebad urged citizens to come forward and join hands with institutions to eliminate polio from the country.

He said Sindh government will always be grateful to those institutions, including Rotary Foundation, for launching polio eradication campaigns. 

On this occasion, Michael McGovern briefed the governor about the steps taken by his organization against the disease and said that Pakistan is one of top three most-affected countries in the world in polio cases.

However, it was encouraging to know that polio cases which surfaced in Pakistan were less than the last year, he added.

He further said that measures taken for boosting polio campaigns have now brought good results. He said Rotary has been working for polio-free campaigns since 1985, and it is now a frontline organization all over the world.

Later, the governor lauded the efforts of Michael and thanked all members of the delegation.
