ISLAMABAD: Dr. Jamal Nasir, the Provincial Minister for Primary and Secondary Health and Population Welfare, has issued a stern warning to the public, urging them to exercise vigilance and prioritize their health amidst the rising threat of pneumonia cases linked to smoggy weather.
In a statement to the media, Dr. Nasir emphasized that individuals with compromised immunity due to underlying chronic conditions such as heart disease, kidney or liver ailments, or diabetes are at heightened risk of contracting respiratory illnesses during cold weather. Health experts have also raised concerns about a significant uptick in pneumonia cases, particularly among the elderly and children, urging citizens to adopt preventive measures.
Dr. Nasir advised the public to ensure they get plenty of rest, consume warm beverages, consider steam baths, or use humidifiers at home to maintain air moisture levels. Timely consultations with healthcare professionals were also strongly recommended in case of respiratory issues.
The Provincial Minister attributed the surge in pneumonia cases to undiagnosed influenza and pneumonia instances, underscoring the importance of seeking immediate medical attention when experiencing respiratory symptoms. He confirmed that the current pneumonia cases had surpassed last year's figures, necessitating precautionary measures to protect vulnerable populations, especially young children, from the harsh winter conditions prevailing in the province.
Furthermore, Dr. Nasir informed the public that the Punjab government is taking action against vehicles emitting harmful emissions, and strict monitoring of industries and brick kilns causing environmental pollution is underway with the cooperation of district administrations.
In addition to the mandatory mask mandate in schools, Dr. Nasir urged the general public to proactively use masks as part of their efforts to safeguard their health amidst the ongoing smog crisis.
