Dow Medical College celebrates 75th anniversary

KARACHI: The Dow Medical College (DMC) recently commemorated the completion of its 75 years at a simple but colourful ceremony attracting several alumni of the institution and senior physicians of the city.

The college is named after Sir Hugh Dow, the then Sindh governor, who laid its foundation stone on Dec 10, 1945.

Recollecting his memories as a student at the college, Prof Ghaffar Billo said the college was in its infancy when he took admission in 1954. Today, it had transformed into an institution with numerous disciplines and specialities establishing its integrity within and outside the country, he said.

Dr Tipu Sultan appreciated the administration for holding a jubilee event and said, "It's like a dream meeting with old colleagues and seniors after a long time. We are grateful for this opportunity."

Highlighting the academic contribution of the college and its students, Prof Zakinddin Oonwala said the DMC had produced outstanding doctors and its students had set an example by serving the poor through the Patient Welfare Association.

Prof Iqbal Memon said the DMC had rendered great service to the country by providing quality education and clinical experience to thousands of students. "We have served people in the health sector and we will continue to do so."

Sharing how the university is meeting the current health challenges, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) Vice-Chancellor, Prof Muhammad Saeed Quraishy said that the university was one of the few of institutions which had remained on the front line in treatment of and research on Covid-19.

Praising the faculty and staff, he said it was a great pleasure to observe the jubilee of the DMC with its alumni.

"The institution is now internationally recognised. It's not just a medical college, but a healthcare system with a network of affiliated institutes having over 8,000 students."

Those attending the event included Dr Shershah Syed, Dr Zafar, Dr Shaista Affendi, Dr D.S. Akram, Dr Khalid Mehmood, Dr Saad Khalid Niaz, Dr Khalid Paracha, Prof M.A. Almani, Prof Salahuddin Afsar and Prof Tipu Sultan. The last three were former DMC principals.

The event concluded with the release of 75 pigeons and the distribution of gifts.
