ISLAMABAD: Federal Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan has sought comprehensive proposals from the Pakistan Ginners Association (PGA) and the Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA) to boost both sectors and their exports.

The development came during his meetings with representatives of the PGA and the PPMA held recently to discuss pressing issues in the cotton and pharmaceutical sectors.

During the meeting with the PGA, Chairman Dr. Jassu Mal highlighted the sharp decline in ginning companies, dropping from 1,200 to just 400, leading to inefficiencies in the cotton supply chain.

The minister emphasized the importance of revitalizing the industry, calling for reforms by the government to reduce taxes and boost domestic production, which could save the country billions spent on cotton imports.

He proposed industry collaboration through seminars and workshops to create a sustainable action plan, besides seeking PGA proposals for funding under the Export Development Fund (EDF).

In a separate meeting, PPMA officials discussed the potential to expand Pakistan’s pharmaceutical exports.

The association suggested forming a Pharma Export Promotion Council, which could help increase pharmaceutical exports beyond the current $341 million mark.

The minister asked the PPMA to submit a comprehensive plan to boost exports and assured government support through the EDF.
