The United States is experiencing its highest flu-related hospitalization rates for this time of year in a decade. It arrives at a great moment for health exhaustion, as more individuals abandon COVID precautions such as mask use, hand washing, and extra cleaning.
Dr James Neid, director of Infection Medical Prevention at the Medical Center of Aurora, hopes that society will grow more secure due to the lessons learnt from COVID, not less. Neid may work in a state that has not yet had an influenza outbreak, but he urges his community to take action. Along with the District of Columbia and New York City, seventeen states record high or extremely high respiratory disease activity. Virginia is among such states.
Dr Brooke Rossheim is a physician specializing in public health at the Virginia Office of Epidemiology. These enormous numbers, he notes, are a direct result of human activities over the past few decades.
