Minister exhorts KWSB to supply chlorinated water

KARACHI- Sindh Minister for Health Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar has said that the provincial heath department in collaboration with Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB) will distribute bottles of Sodium Hypo-chloride and chlorine tablets free of cost among the residents of the localities affected by deadly Naegleria fowleri.

Moreover, an awareness campaign about the lethal disease will be launched in different localities, especially with the help of mosques’ management, he added.

He was presiding over a meeting of officials of health department which was also attended by KWSB managing director Hashim Raza Zaidi. Special Secretary Health Dr Khalid Shaikh, EDO (Health) Karachi Dr Zafar Aijaz, Chief Chemist Yahya Waseem Qureshi, Dr Muhammad Ahsan Siddiqui and et al. were also present.

The KWSB chief informed the meeting that chlorine worth Rs10.3 million bought by the water utility every month is used in its five filter plants.

The meeting decided that the KWSB must ensure percentage of chlorine in its filter plans in conformity with international standards. It also stressed the need for increasing the number of KWSB boosters from existing 11 to 30 so as to ensure that purified water also reaches to its tail-end consumers.

At the outset, the minister highlighted the importance of conserving water, urging the owners of service stations to use boring water for washing vehicles.
