ISLAMABAD: Serious stomach-related diseases, including colorectal cancer, can be prevented by bringing changes in our lifestyle and dietary habits, says Dr Hyder Abbasi, a consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist.
In a recent interview with the national television PTv News, he has underscored the pivotal role of lifestyle modifications in the comprehensive management of stomach diseases.
Addressing the intricate connection between mental and physical health, Dr Hyder emphasised its significance in addressing stomach-related health issues effectively.
He pointed out that persistent abdominal discomfort, a common ailment, becomes a cause for concern when accompanied by alarming symptoms.
Dr Hyder identified red flags such as unexplained weight loss, chronic constipation, or traces of blood in urine, signaling the need for a more in-depth investigation into the underlying causes. He recommended individuals aged 50 and above undergo a colonoscopy test as part of a comprehensive examination of the intestines.
However, Dr Hyder acknowledged that barriers such as carelessness and a lack of resources often hinder many from pursuing necessary diagnostic procedures.
He expressed concern over the premature attribution of urinary issues to hemorrhoids, leading individuals to self-medicate without a proper diagnosis.
Dr Hyder regretted that people often become aware of the true underlying problem, such as colorectal cancer, only when the condition exacerbates.
Addressing inflammatory bowel syndromes (IBS), Dr Hyder explained that IBS presents a unique challenge in diagnosis as unlike other conditions, IBS often doesn't present clear signs on medical scans.
He warns that symptoms like abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, and constipation can point to IBS. Dr. Hyder recommended a holistic approach to diagnosis and treatment, including counseling, as effective in managing IBS.
Highlighting the importance of swift action in IBS cases, he cautioned that delaying tests may lead to complications.
He suggested a holistic approach to overall well-being, including a diet rich in fiber, increased vegetable intake, regular exercise, and mental health awareness.
