KARACHI: The Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), one of the country's recognized tertiary care medical institutions, has reiterated that its mandated clinical activities are continuing unhampered along with the facilities that are earmarked for COVID-19 patients.

While highlighting the institute's performance during the past four months, a spokesman of the institute said that in March, when the menace of the pandemic started surfacing, the SIUT took a historic decision and stepped forward voluntarily by initiating its professional services for incoming corona patients.

Those were the days when corona patients were rising in multiple numbers every day. According to the representative, the decision on the part of the SIUT was taken purely on humanitarian grounds with the prime objective to mitigate the suffering of the population besides supplementing government hospitals' efforts, which were found grappling the situation in a metropolis with a massive population of 20 million.

The decision on the part of the SIUT to adopt and create new facilities for corona patients was not easy without disturbing their immunocompromised patients of dialysis, transplant, and cancer, the spokesman added. The SIUT always faces these patients' brunt as no one has the expertise and infrastructure to attend to these patients. Therefore, the SIUT was converted into the country's largest medical establishment treating immunocompromised corona patients, the spokesman pointed out.

Till mid-June, over 7,800 patients who were screened at the SIUT, including some 1,003 patients, were treated by SIUT personnel. The services provided by the SIUT include testing, case tracing, disease monitoring, infection prevention, and follow up care of the patient. All the treatment was free with dignity, a cornerstone of the SIUT’s philosophy.

The SIUT has always played its due role in meeting medical challenges at the time of national calamities and disasters, he added.
