GENEVA: The Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), threatens to harm people all over the world and should not be ignored as a minor threat.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General, WHO, indicated hospitals were overburdened as a result of the unprecedented number of patients infected with the new strain, which has outcompeted the Delta variant in several regions of the world.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated, “Omicron appears to be less severe than Delta, especially in those who are vaccinated, but this does not mean it should be classified as mild.”
According to him, there is a tsunami of cases happening worldwide rapidly that health systems are being overwhelmed. Last week, the WHO received a record number of new COVID-19 cases, up 71 per cent from the week before. He claimed this figure was a significant miscalculation because it did not account for the backlog of testing during the holidays, positive self-tests that were not reported, and overburdened monitoring systems that missed instances.
