UNHCR hands over tents, other relief items to Sindh

KARACHI: UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has provided the Sindh government with tens of thousands of tents and other emergency relief supplies, which would aid hundreds of thousands of flood-affected individuals in the province.

The first three of nine scheduled flights to Pakistan have arrived, with the remaining six anticipated this week. Uzbekistan-bound UNHCR vehicles delivering humanitarian supplies are also on the way, and further convoys are anticipated. From Peshawar, which has already reached the Humanitarian Response Facilities in Sukkur, relief supplies are being transported.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority in Sindh province is receiving 112,000 Sleeping mats, 18,800 tents, 76,000 buckets, 310,000 blankets, 67,500 plastic tarpaulins, 56,500 jerrycans, 150,000 mosquito nets, 32,000 Sanitary napkins, 140,000 Solar Lamps, 24,700 kitchen sets, 4,500 Soap, and 3,500 Dignity Kits.

Leyla Nugmanova, Assistant Representative for Protection at UNHCR, met with Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister Of Sindh. The CM's team briefed UNHCR representatives on the current situation and damage in several flood-affected regions.

Syed Salman Shah, UNHCR Representative and PDMA Director General signed a memorandum to hand over the supplies for prompt distribution to flood-affected individuals.

The chief minister of Sindh applauded UNHCR's assistance, describing it as timely and essential given the magnitude of the requirements. 
The world has yet to comprehend the magnitude of this calamity and the destruction caused by floods.

Leyla Nugmanova, UNHCR's Assistant Representative for Protection in Pakistan, stated, "UNHCR is providing Pakistan with every possible assistance in this time of need."

"Based on our forty-year collaboration and Pakistan's exceptional compassion toward refugees, we cannot let the nation and its people deal with this enormous catastrophe on their own. She continued, "The international community must comprehend the plight of the Pakistani people and intervene immediately."

The UNHCR has been a part of the monsoon response since July when the organisation began providing refugees and host communities with relief supplies and support. In addition, the UNHCR actively delivered tents to the refugees and host communities impacted by the flooding through its partners.
