JSMU partners with JPMC to transform BMSI

KARACHI: Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) has partnered with Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) to restructure the Basic Medical Sciences Institute (BMSI) building, following Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Pechuho's announcement of establishing a research institute for health sciences. The announcement was made during JSMU's 6th Senate meeting last month.
Vice Chancellor JSMU, Prof. Amjad Siraj Memon, highlighted the Sindh Health Minister’s vision during the recent signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between JPMC and JSMU. Prof. Memon acknowledged the cooperation of JPMC’s Executive Director, Prof. Shahid Rasul, and Prof. Tariq Mehmood in finalizing the restructuring plan and the MoU.
The collaboration aims to transform BMSI, originally established by JPMC as its research and postgraduate education arm, into a School of Postgraduate Studies. This new entity will offer programs in basic, clinical, and allied health sciences under JSMU’s academic framework.
"This partnership between JPMC and JSMU will significantly enhance the educational and research capabilities of the Basic Medical Sciences Institute. By integrating BMSI into JSMU’s academic structure, we will provide comprehensive postgraduate programs that nurture the next generation of healthcare professionals and advance medical research in the region," said Executive Director JPMC, Prof. Shahid Rasul.
Under the 25-year agreement, JSMU will assume full administrative and academic control of BMSI. The university will manage faculty recruitment, admissions, and laboratory services, such as histopathology and microbiology, in alignment with the institute's academic and research goals.
The MoU was signed by Registrar JSMU, Dr. Azam Khan, and Executive Director JPMC, Prof. Shahid Rasul, with witnesses including Dean of Basic Medical Sciences JSMU, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Azhar Mughal, and BMSI Coordinator, Prof. Dr. Kausar Abbas Saldera.
This partnership is expected to strengthen the region’s educational and research landscape by offering robust postgraduate programs that develop healthcare professionals and advance medical research. The ceremony was attended by institutional heads and chairpersons from both JPMC and JSMU.
