PESHAWAR: The Khyber Medical University (KMU) Institute of Public Mental Health & Behavioral Sciences hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar, focusing on the theme, “We are stronger when we stand together—whether as survivors, supporters, or advocates for change.”

Renowned guest speakers, Dr. Zainab Jan and Dr. Asad Zamir from IRNUM Peshawar, delivered insightful presentations highlighting the global breast cancer burden. They emphasized that early detection is a key factor in saving lives. Citing international statistics, they stressed that breast cancer, if caught in its early stages, offers nearly a 100% survival rate.

The seminar touched on vital topics such as common breast cancer symptoms, the barriers to early detection in low- and middle-income countries like Pakistan, and the importance of annual screenings, including mammograms and clinical breast exams.

The speakers also focused on breast cancer risk factors, such as lifestyle habits, obesity, and family history, while encouraging attendees to adopt protective practices like regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and breastfeeding. In addition, they debunked myths and misconceptions, providing attendees with reliable, science-based information to make informed decisions.

From a treatment perspective, the session covered options like chemotherapy and surgery, reiterating that survival rates are highest when cancer is detected early.

Dr. Huma Atta, Head of the Institute of Public Mental Health, added a psychosocial dimension, linking mental health to cancer recovery. She underscored the importance of emotional support, access to educational resources, and regular self-examinations in aiding both physical and psychological healing.

The seminar's ultimate goal was to raise awareness, dispel stigmas, encourage early diagnosis, and improve survival rates.

As the event concluded, attendees collectively pledged to advocate for breast cancer awareness and support those affected by the disease, reaffirming the seminar’s central message: Together, we are stronger.
