ISLAMABAD: The National Institute of Health (NIH) Centers for Disease Control (CDC) at NIH Islamabad has issued an advisory to prevent and control Acute Watery Diarrhea (Cholera), urging healthcare providers and the public to be vigilant against the spread of cholera, an acute diarrheal illness caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.
Pakistan, like other Asian countries, is endemic to cholera, with cases reported from various parts of the country. Poor personal hygiene and lack of access to safe drinking water exacerbate the risk of outbreaks, particularly in vulnerable areas. While cholera can occur year-round, the peak incidence typically occurs from May to November during the hot, humid, and rainy season.
The NIH emphasizes the importance of individual preventive measures, including frequent handwashing with soap and water, especially after using the toilet, changing diapers, and before preparing or eating food. The advisory also recommends drinking only safe water, whether boiled, chlorinated, or bottled.
