WHO voices concern as Gaza hospital hit without warning

BERLIN: The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed grave concern following the bombing of the Kamal Adwan hospital in Gaza early Thursday morning. WHO’s Regional Representative, Rik Peeperkorn, confirmed that there was no indication that a warning was issued prior to the attack, which has left the hospital severely damaged.
The incident is particularly alarming as it comes just one week after Israeli authorities facilitated the entry of an Indonesian emergency medical team to the hospital. Peeperkorn noted the disturbing reality that within such a short period, the medical team was forced to leave the hospital, underscoring the increasing dangers healthcare workers face in conflict zones.
"Within one week, they feel forced, scared, whatever the reason, to leave,” Peeperkorn said in a UN Geneva briefing conducted by video link. "That is extremely concerning and should never happen."
The Kamal Adwan hospital, once a vital healthcare facility, is currently described as “minimally functional,” leaving the local population without essential medical care amid the ongoing crisis.
The WHO continues to call for the protection of health workers and medical facilities in conflict zones, emphasizing the importance of adhering to international humanitarian laws to ensure that civilian healthcare services remain accessible and protected.
