SHCC imposes 1.4million fines on quacks

KARACHI: The 9th meeting of the Directorate of Anti-Quackery was held at the Head Office of the Sindh Health Care Commission (SHCC). 

Dr Khalid Shaikh, Commissioner and Convener, Anti-Quackery Committee, chaired a meeting. It was attended by Jawad Amin Khan, Commissioner, SHCC, and Dr A Razaque Shaikh, Commissioner, SHCC, alongside Dr Ahson Qavi Siddiqui, Chief Executive Officer, SHCC, Director Anti-Quackery and team. 

Over 34 cases of quackery were reviewed for penalties from all over the province. ‘We must ensure follow-ups on all penalty cases to confirm the quackery status on all concerned Healthcare establishments’, stated Dr Khalid Shaikh. 

The total amount of Rs 1,440,000 (1.4million) was imposed in light of quackery incidents across the province. 

The committee reviewed the monthly recovery rate on penalties imposed which was recorded at 63 per cent in the month of November, indicating a positive trajectory for the Directorate of Anti-Quackery. The Board of Commissioners appreciated that. 

The committee further ordered more rigorous fines on health care practitioners charged with ‘illegal de-sealing’ of their premises under section 39-1(h) of the SHCC regulations 2017. 

It was also recommended that Lady health visitors operating in far-flung areas of Sindh must be given a slight relief in terms of the fine if they are found to be in compliance with the basic code of conduct.
