AI can now help diagnose UTIs at earlier stages

SCOTLAND: Residents of Old Age Homes in Scotland can now benefit from revolutionary technology. Artificial Intelligence-based robots can aid the detection of Urinary tract Infections at earlier stages.

This project has been awarded funding of around 1 million pounds by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).

Researchers from the University of Edinburgh and the Heriot-Watt University have collaborated to put the feather initiative, into motion. The feather initiative work to diminish the negative consequences of late diagnosis of UTIs in geriatric patients.

UTIs are the most common types of infection, around 150 million people suffer from the infection on a daily basis, globally.

This project seeks to reduce the overprescription of antibiotics for this common infection and to also avoid patients from entering emergency or accidents with undiagnosed UTIs

Professor Nazarpour, the project lead and Professor of Digital Health at the School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh, said:

“Earlier detection makes timely treatment possible, improving outcomes for patients, lowering the number of people presenting at A&E, and reducing costs to the NHS.”
