PMA Sindh expresses concern over the alarming rise in measles cases

KARACHI: The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Sindh noted the alarming increase in cases of measles in the entire province of Sindh with great concern. Paediatricians and family physicians working in the suburbs of Karachi have confirmed this report.

General Secretary, PMA Sindh, Dr Rafiq ul Hassan Khokhar, in his statement, said that according to the media, some deaths have also been reported from upper Sindh like Larkana, Qambar, Shahdadkot, etc. The prime reason for the surge in the number of measles cases and deaths is supposedly the lack of vaccination. Another alarming situation is that if a child does not respond to the treatment of measles, he or she may later suffer from HIV/AIDS.

These children mostly have low immunity because of malnourishment. We cannot rule out the possibility of a lack of vaccinators as they are busy with COVID vaccinations.

The PMA Sindh believes that this is an alarming situation that needs to be taken care of sooner than later. Otherwise, this miserable situation will further aggravate the devastating loss of preventable deaths of children, he said.

The PMA Sindh demanded swift action in this regard.
