MN Report

KARACHI- Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) administration had to postpone 20 scheduled surgical operations last Tuesday owing to 24-hour suspension of water supply to the hospital.

Sources that Karachi Water and Sewerage Board’s (KWSB) act of suspending the JPMC’s water supply for 24 hours not only resulted in the postponement of surgical operations, but also added miseries to the indoor patients, doctors, paramedical staff, nurses and other employees of the hospital as they had no alternative arrangement of getting water supply.

Even the cleanliness and sanitary work of the sprawling JPMC was badly affected in the wake of acute water shortage, the sources said, adding that there was no water in operation theatres, wards, College of Nursing, Paramedical Training Institution, staff and doctors residential areas during the water supply suspension period.

They said that though the KWSB administration has supplied water to the health facility through tankers, the supply was insufficient to meet the hospital’s requirement.

JPMC’s deputy director (Admin) Dr Jawaid Jamali when contacted confirmed that about 20 scheduled operations were postponed on the day when the hospital’s water supply was suspended for 24 hours.

He said KWSB administration, on the request of JPMC management, sent water tankers but the supply through tankers was not enough to meet the hospital’s requirement.
