Naegleria Claims another Life in Karachi

KARACHI-  Death toll goes up to 2 this year, as N. Fowleri claims yet another life.


According to Focal Person for the Naegleria Control Committee, Sindh, Dr. Syed Zafar Mehdi,  a 16-year-old girl , Sana , resident of  North Karachi died in a private hospital of Karachi. She was diagnosed with Naegleria Fowleri in her system, and passed away during treatment.


Earlier in May, A 40-year-old Pervez, resident of  Gulistan-e-Jauhar, also died at a private hospital in Karachi, due to this brain eating amoeba. A total of two unfortunate deaths were reported within the city, in a month.


Health Experts stated that, Naegleria Fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba, enters through a person's nose and starts consuming their brain tissue. This organism can survive in high temperatures, and is most likely to be found in fresh water bodies such as ponds, lakes, swimming pools, as well as underground and overhead tanks.


A 6-member focal committee, leads by Dr. Syed Zafar Mehdi has been appointed by the Sindh Health Department, to formulate control and prevention strategies for Naegleria Fowleri.
