MANGHOPIR LEPROSY HOSPITAL - Infectious diseases dept to open soon

KARACHI- Despite completion of construction work of  a new block for housing infectious diseases department of Manghopir Leprosy Hospital, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s (KMC) administration could not arrange its employees, including doctors, nurses and paramedical staff, it has emerged.

An official of Manghopir Leprosy Hospital, who wished not to be quoted, said that though with the construction of a new block, the strength of beds in the hospital had been increased from 200 to 250 beds, KMC failed to allocate funds in its budget for the employees of the hospital’s infectious diseases department.

About the Leprosy Hospital, the official said that it is the first hospital of its kind where best diagnosis and treatment facilities for a number of ailments such as leprosy, hepatitis, tuberculosis, eye and other skin diseases are available.

He regretted that despite unique importance of the Leprosy Hospital, the KMC has not yet given the status of an institute to the hospital’s Infectious diseases department.

However, Manghopir Leprosy Hospital’s medical superintendent Dr Muhammad Ali Abbasi said that the hospital’s new block’s 90 per cent construction work has been accomplished and with the completion of remaining work, the department of infectious diseases would become operational and as far as provision of medical staff for the department is concerned it would be arranged soon with the allocation of budget.
