ISLAMABAD: The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has imposed a strict ban on the sale and use of counterfeit Mirzpan Suspension after confirming that batch 007 of the antibiotic was fake.

DRAP issued a product recall alert following the discovery of counterfeit Mirzpan Suspension in Balochistan. A drug testing laboratory in Quetta declared the batch counterfeit, revealing that it failed quality tests. The sample portion “Suspension Mirzpan” contains no Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (Cefixime), bears a fake registration number in seven digits, and exhibit a pH value of 6.51, which is outside the USP specified range of 2.5 – 4.5. Additionally, the outer packaging contains multiple spelling errors, as well as ambiguous and misleading information.

Authorities have directed field officers and provincial drug control departments to enhance market surveillance and identify suppliers of fake medicines. The Balochistan government has also been urged to take immediate action against those involved in the supply of counterfeit drugs.

Distributors have been instructed to check their stock for counterfeit Mirzpan Suspension and report any affected products to DRAP. The authority has advised doctors and patients to refrain from using the fake antibiotic to avoid potential health risks.
