Ex-principal of R.G. Kar Medical College held over graft

Kolkata, India: R.G. Kar Medical College’s former principal Sandip Ghosh has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), India's federal police, on charges of alleged financial irregularities.

The arrest follows an investigation linked to the brutal rape and murder of a young female doctor at the institution.

Ghosh, who had resigned from his position at the historic British colonial-era college shortly after the rape-cum-murder incident, was detained by CBI, recently, along with two hospital supply vendors and a close aide.

The details of the financial irregularities allegedly committed by the former principal have not been disclosed by the CBI. Attempts to contact Ghosh or his legal representatives for comment remained unsuccessful.

The rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor over three weeks ago sparked widespread protests among the medical community in India, prompting doctors and activists to demand enhanced safety measures for women in the workplace and justice for the victim.

The incident has drawn renewed attention to the ongoing issue of sexual violence against women in India, despite the introduction of stricter laws following the 2012 gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old student in New Delhi.

The case is being investigated and further details are expected to be unveiled.
