Polio program head Dr Shahzad Baig quits

ISLAMABAD: Citing personal reasons, Dr Shahzad Baig, the National Coordinator for Pakistan's Polio Eradication Programme, has resigned from his post.

Reports indicate that the government had recently decided to appoint government officials to the polio program. Dr. Baig had been facing severe criticism for the continued spread of polio in Pakistan.

To date, polio has been confirmed in 153 environmental samples across 39 districts in the country, with three children affected by the disease.
