KARACHI: The city of Karachi has witnessed its fourth case of Naegleria fowleri infection this year, with the tragic death of a 19-year-old male resident of District East. The young man, who passed away at a private hospital on September 2, 2024, succumbed to the rare but deadly brain-eating amoeba.
The patient initially displayed symptoms including fever, headache, and nausea on August 18, 2024. He was admitted to the hospital on August 21, and Naegleria fowleri was confirmed on August 25. Despite extensive investigations, it was found that the patient had no recent history of water-related activities. His only exposure to water was through routine ablution (wuzu) at home and occasionally at a nearby mosque.
This unfortunate incident marks the fourth reported case of Naegleria fowleri in Karachi this year. Earlier cases were reported in Korangi, Malir, and Quaidabad, with the latter occurring on July 11, 2024. Naegleria fowleri has previously claimed lives across various regions of Pakistan, with at least 10 deaths reported last year alone. The infection remains highly fatal, with a mortality rate of approximately 98 percent.
Health authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and take preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection. Regular updates and preventive guidelines will be issued to inform and protect the community from this deadly organism.
