KARACHI: The management of the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto (SMBB) Institute of Trauma has decided to expand its Orthopedic Department keeping in view the increasing number of ortho-related injuries in the megacity.
Chief Operating Officer (COO), SMBB Institute of Trauma, Dr Aijaz Zubedi, said that the trauma center is catering to emergency trauma patients round the clock and the entire department is operational. He informed that the SMBB administration has decided to increase the number of beds in the Orthopedic Department of the Trauma Institute to facilitate more patients.
Currently, there are more than 40 beds in the Orthopedic Department. The bed capacity will be expanded to 70 shortly. He said that this step is being taken to cater to the increasing number of ortho-related injuries in the city. He informed that oral and maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery, thoracic and open-heart surgery, and other trauma-related facilities are available at the institution.
Dr Aijaz Zubedi further informed that two CT Scan and X-ray machines, a state-of-the-art Cath lab and other diagnostic facilities are available in the Trauma Institute at present. An advanced MRI machine has been purchased which will be made functional within a month, he added.
He proceeded to state that 80 doctors and supporting staff are available in the institution to cater to the patients round the clock. The Institute intends to hire more doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff in the near future.
