Seminar held at HCM&D - HU vice chancelllor highlights importance of research

KARACHI- Hamdard College of Medicine and Dentistry’s (HCM&D) with a view to promoting research culture among students and faculty members recently organised a seminar at its main campus, located at Madinat al-Hikmah.

Fourth year students of the college presented their research works on different topics at the seminar that has become an annual feature of the university.

A presentation titled “A study of presence of Bacterial Pathogens in poultry chicken in different areas of Karachi” clinched the first prize, presentation on “Musculo Skeletal Disorders among medical students of Hamdard University” bagged second prize, while the third prize went to a research on “Assessment of health status and occupational safety measures among coal mine workers in Shahrug-Balochistan”. The prize-winning presentations were made by different groups of students, led by Muhammad Osama, Tayaba Shahid Khan and Iqra Shaukat, respectively.

Yet anothet research conducted on “Disorders of Upper Extremities associated with prolonged use of Smart phones” by another group of students, led by Hafsa Qureshi, was awarded a special prize.
The panel of judges comprised chief editor JPMA Journal Dr Fatema Jawad;  chief editor Annals Journal, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Karachi Medical and Dental College, Prof Dr Sina Aziz; chairperson community of health sciences, United Medical College, Prof Dr Seema Mumtaz and chairperson of community health sciences department of Bahria Medical and Dental College Prof Dr Imran Sheikh.

Hamdard University’s chancellor Mrs Sadia Rashid, who was chief guest on the occasion, gave away prizes to the winners and shields to the judges and supervisors of the research groups.
Speaking on the occasion, Hamdard University’s vice chancellor Prof  Dr Hakim Abdul Hannan, said that the university’s founder, Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said, had always emphasized the need for carrying out research work and wanted the university to do in-depth research for the benefit of human being. 

Commending the academic activities of the community health sciences department and the researches undertaken by the students of HCM&D, he said, universities were always recognized by their research work.
In his welcome address, Dean Faculty of Health & Medical Sciences, Prof Dr Muhammad Javed, also lauded the efforts of the department of community health sciences in making the event a great success.
Highlighting the importance of research, he said that we should have  to conduct research so as to know why the menace of polio has not yet been eradicated from Pakistan when almost entire world had successfully managed to curb the cripling disease.

The seminar was largely atended by faculty members and students.
