Sindh registers 114,225 malaria cases

KARACHI: The Vector-Borne Diseases Department of the Directorate General Health Services, Sindh, has registered 114,225 cases across the Sindh province in 2020, while no malaria-related death was reported in the province.

According to the statistics shared by the Sindh Health Department, a total of 114,225 malaria cases recorded throughout the province last year. The most of cases were reported in Umerkot (14,580), Thatta (13,284), Badin (12,620), Tharparkar (11,308), Larkana (10,902), Tando Muhammad Khan (9,814), and Mirpurkhas (7,116).

Similarly, more than 1,032 malaria cases were reported in Karachi in 2020 at the microscopic centres working in the city to treat malaria patients. The number of malaria cases was low in Karachi, Hyderabad, and other urban cities compared to the rural areas of the province.

Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease, and its outbreak took place after the monsoon rains, due to which thousands of people fell sick in all of Sindh. The malaria cases were common in the rural areas of Sindh province compared to the urban areas; dengue cases were generally reported from the urban areas.

In Sindh, more than 1200 malaria diagnostic and treatment centres are operating all over the province.

In 2019, the Malaria Control Program Sindh recorded 146,470 malaria positive cases in the province.
