KARACHI: To encourage an open discussion in society regarding the challenges and stigma associated with breast cancer, the Ziauddin University (ZU) recently organized a month-long breast cancer awareness campaign, which also featured a poster competition.
The initiative, involving students and faculty, encouraged a supportive environment for individuals to discuss health concerns, promoting early detection and timely medical intervention.
ZU Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Abbas Zafar highlighted the campaign’s success and significance, saying, “This initiative is more than just an event; it’s a powerful call to action. We’re raising awareness for everyone, as breast cancer impacts countless lives, with nearly 40,000 women in Pakistan lost to this disease annually. Breaking down taboos is essential to building a healthier future.”
He urged faculty, students, and management to extend this commitment to all health and societal issues needing attention, adding, “If universities across Pakistan unite in such campaigns, together we can save lives and create lasting change.”
The poster competition drew submissions from all ZU campuses, with over 200 posters received. A curated selection of 45 digital and 10 handmade posters was showcased, celebrating participants’ creativity and dedication.
Contest winners included Marya Darugar (1st place, College of Dentistry), Hudabiya Naaz (2nd place, College of Rehabilitation Sciences), and Kashaf Diam (3rd place, College of Medical Technology).
Judges Xenab Ansari, Founder of The Power Circle; Nomaan Bhatti, Assistant Professor of Communication Design at Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture; and Mathew Fitzpatrick, International Faculty at the College of Podiatric Medicine, awarded cash prizes to the winners.
