Justice Kausar Sultana Hussain of the Sindh High Court (SHC) issued notices to the Sindh government authorities, including the chief secretary, secretary of the boards and universities department, JSMU VC, and other defendants, as well as advocates general, in response to the petition challenging the appointment of the vice-chancellor of the Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) without merit.
Justice Kausar Sultana Hussain issued notice to the officials of the Government of Sindh.
A date for hearing those served with notices will be determined in the future.
Through her attorney Haider Waheed, Prof. Dr Lubna Ansari Baig petitioned the SHC to suspend Prof. Dr Amjad Siraj Memon's appointment as vice-chancellor and reinstate Prof. Dr Shahid Rasool as acting VC until the dispute was resolved.
Lubna Baig urged SHC to cancel appointment of Dr Amajd Siraj Memon as VC JSMU
Lubna Baig informed the high court that she was a professor at JSMU and one of the applicants shortlisted for appointment as the university's vice-chancellor.
She presented a copy of the merit list and stated that the search committee had shortlisted her and two other candidates and that her score (70) was the highest among them, followed by Dr Amjad Memon's 67.25 points and Prof. Dr Khaja H. Mujtaba's 48.75 marks.
The attorney, Haider Waheed, stated that Dr Memon was named vice chancellor via a March 24 notification for a four-year term.
He argued that the appointment breached a Supreme Court order stating that the individual with the best grades shall be selected unless the chief minister provides a sufficient reason against his/her nomination, which would be subject to court review.
Waheed stated that his client had asked the relevant authorities why they had appointed Dr Memon as the VC, to which they replied that they were not required to respond.
