Punjab Medical Colleges - Faculty members’ shortage to be overcome soon

LAHORE- The Punjab government has decided to overcome shortage of faculty members at four newly-established public sector medical colleges through special selection boards and in accordance with Autonomous Medical Institutions Act 2004.

A decision to this effect was taken a meeting held here last Wednesday. It was attended, among others, by Minister for Zakat, adviser to CM on Health, chief secretary, health secretary, services secretary (S&GAD), regulations secretary, special finance secretary and principals of four medical colleges of DG Khan, Sialkot, Gujranwala and Sahiwal.
The adviser to CM on Health said that internal issues of PMDC were also affecting the public sector medical colleges.
The Zakat minister pointed out that a medical college set up at Sahiwal was facing acute shortage of staff. He was of the view that the problem of shortage of staff could be resolved by providing financial incentives to the faculty.

When the meeting was told that the medical colleges of Sialkot and Gujranwala were also facing similar problems, the health secretary said that staffing position of these two medical colleges was comparatively better.
The meeting decided that the teaching faculty would be appointed initially for 3 to 5 years as per existing terms and conditions of the contract policy. A policy shall be adopted by these medical colleges/autonomous institutions to ensure publication of advertisements for recruitments, method of walk in interviews on a fixed day, speedy recruitment, while adhering to the required qualification and experience prescribed under relevant rules.
The process of recruitment would be continued till the staffing position in all the four medical colleges was satisfactorily improved. The recommendations of the meeting would, however, be subject to the chief minister’s approval, the meeting decide.
