ISLAMABAD: The type-1 wild poliovirus has been detected in sewage samples from seven districts across Pakistan, with the number of positive samples rising to 203 in 2024.
The affected districts include Islamabad, Quetta, Nasirabad, Karachi, Peshawar, and Gujranwala. Quetta reported three positive samples, while Karachi reported two.
This marks the first time poliovirus has been detected in Gujranwala’s sewage this year.
Sampling for polio testing was conducted in the affected districts in June. So far this year, 47 districts have reported the presence of poliovirus in their sewage, and eight polio cases have been reported nationwide.
