JPMC Cyberknife honored by Royal College of Radiologists

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah commended the recognition bestowed upon the Cyberknife Radiation Oncology service at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Karachi by the Royal College of Radiologists, United Kingdom. He views this award as a testament to the government's dedication to the health sector and the province's residents.

The Cyberknife and Radiation Oncology services at JPMC Karachi were recently honored by the Royal College of Radiologists in the United Kingdom. This accolade is a source of immense pride for Sindh and Pakistan, underscoring the acknowledgment of the free cancer treatment facility provided through a public-private partnership between the Sindh government and the Patients Aid Foundation at JPMC Karachi by the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) UK.
Established in 1897 with the advent of X-ray radiation and the formation of the Roentgen Society, the RCR boasts the largest number of fellows globally, serving as Radiologists and Radiation Oncologists.
The Honorary Fellowship by the RCR stands as the most prestigious recognition granted to a non-Fellow of the College, with only 78 individuals worldwide having received this honor to date. Prof. Dr. Tariq Mahmood was awarded this distinction at Central Hall Westminster, London. The citation highlighted his significant contributions to radiology and radiation oncology in Pakistan.
Prof. Tariq Mahmood, Professor Emeritus of Radiation Oncology at JPMC, is not only the first Pakistani but also the first Muslim Professor globally to receive this prestigious award. Prof. Mahmood expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah and Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho for their donation of a state-of-the-art Cyberknife S7 unit and to the Patients Aid Foundation donors for another Tomotherapy X9 unit.
Since 2012, JPMC has been the sole global provider of free cancer treatment utilizing Cyberknife and Tomotherapy, irrespective of nationality, religion, or ethnicity. To date, patients from 15 countries and 167 cities across Pakistan have benefitted from this invaluable service, which otherwise costs millions globally. The Radiation Oncology department at JPMC is equipped with two Cyberknife units, two Tomotherapy units, and the Equinox 100, placing it among the top ten centers worldwide for cutting-edge technology.
