Karachi: Unidentified thieves looted medicines worth Rs0.3 million from the Burns Center, Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) earlier last week.

A official of Burns Center Karachi on condition of anonymity said that thieves barged into the Pharmacy Department of center and looted the medicine worth of 0.3 million. He said after the incident, the Burns Center is facing an acute shortage of drugs and patients have been forced to purchase medicines from private medical stores.
He said theft of medicines and other official documents has become quite frequent at the Center, and the administration has failed to control these illegal activities. He said that a check and balance system for outsiders at the Center needs to be in place to make sure unauthorized individuals are not permitted to enter the premises.
He feared that certain employees of the Burns Center might be involved in medicine theft because none of closed-circuit television cameras were operating on the day of incident.
He said that the tug of war between the Burns Center administration and management of Friends of Burns Center, a non-governmental organization (NGO) associated with center in public welfare activities, has badly affected the health delivery system.
It seems that the Burns Center administration has dumped the issue as no progress has been made in the medicine theft case despite the passage three weeks, revealed officials. They also said that private guards have failed to control theft from the Center.
Additional Medical Superintendent, CHK & Administrative Control Officer, Burns Center Dr Muhammad Ahmed when contact, admitted that no progress had been made regarding medicine theft. He said first information report (FIR) had been registered against the thieves. He further stated that police has started interrogation of the incident and are also recording the statements of employees at the Center.
